The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned in line an extensive line-up of initiatives to celebrate 100 years of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, Kolkata.

A commemorative stamp, coin, memorabilia, and a pocket-friendly “UDAN Yatri Cafe” will mark the occasion.

According to an AAI statement, the celebrations will commence on December 21 with the inauguration of the cafe, offering affordable dining options to enhance passenger experience. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, along with AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar, will preside over the launch ceremony.

The festivities will continue until March 29, 2025, culminating with the issuance of the commemorative stamp, coin, and other memorabilia.

A coffee table book reflecting India’s cultural heritage through modern airport architecture will also be launched during the closing ceremony.

Situated on 1,566.3 acres and covering a built-up area of 2,30,000 square metres, NSCBI Airport accommodates 26 million passengers annually, connecting 49 domestic and 15 international destinations.

Established as Dum Dum Airport in 1924, it has played a pivotal role in Indian aviation history. Milestones include hosting the Bengal Flying Club in 1929, becoming one of India’s first jet hubs in 1964, and inaugurating a dedicated airline cargo terminal in 1975.

It was renamed in honour of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1995.

AAI sources have revealed that the “UDAN Yatri Cafe” will pilot a curated, cost-effective menu to offer travellers quality food at affordable rates.

The centenary celebrations aim to honour the airport’s rich legacy and its role in shaping India’s aviation industry.
