A tragic incident took place in Kolkata early Monday morning when a seven-year-old girl lost her life after a light fixture detached from a lamp post and fell on her while she was playing.
According to local sources, the child, affectionately known as “Guria,” lived with her family on a footpath in Hastings area. As part of her daily routine, she was playing beneath the lamp post when the fixture suddenly came loose and crashed onto her head, causing severe injuries. Eyewitnesses reported that she collapsed instantly, leaving the area blood-stained.
Family members and nearby shopkeepers rushed her to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Hospital authorities have stated that the body will be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination.
Police from Hastings Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being informed. The victim’s family has alleged long-standing negligence in the maintenance of the lamp post. They claimed that the fixture, which is usually secured with multiple nuts, was hanging precariously with only a single nut in place.
Despite repeated warnings to local authorities about the dangerous condition of the lamppost, no action was taken, the family alleged.
“Our 7-year-old daughter lost her life solely due to negligence in maintenance,” grieving locals said, expressing anger and frustration over what they described as administrative indifference.
The incident has sparked outrage in the area, with residents demanding accountability and immediate inspection of public infrastructure to prevent such tragedies in the future.
