Car crash twist in Kolkata suicide-murder case

The autopsy confirmed that both women had slit wrists and severe throat injuries, indicating they died from ante-mortem wounds. Meanwhile, the minor girl's death was attributed to poisoning.

From suicide to murder: Kolkata case takes mysterious turn with car crash twist.

A chilling murder mystery in Kolkata has captivated the city as police delve into the deaths of two women and a teenage girl, whose bodies were discovered inside their residence in the Tangra area.

Post-mortem reports have confirmed that the three victims were murdered, ruling out initial claims of a family suicide pact. Authorities are now focused on identifying the perpetrators and uncovering the motive behind the crime, according to an officer quoted by PTI.

The forensic autopsy revealed that the two women had deep throat injuries and slit wrists, suggesting they had sustained ante-mortem injuries—wounds inflicted before death. The teenage girl, however, succumbed to poisoning. These findings contradict the earlier claims that the deaths were a result of a collective suicide attempt.

Suicide attempt by car crash

The deceased women—Sudeshna and Romi Dey—were the wives of two brothers, Pranay and Prasun Dey, who lived in the Tangra residence along with Pranay’s son and Prasun’s daughter. The tragic discovery was made after a bizarre sequence of events early Wednesday morning when Pranay and Prasun were injured in a car crash near Abhisikta Metro station in south Kolkata.

The two brothers, along with another injured occupant, had allegedly attempted suicide by ramming their car into a Metro Rail pillar. Following the crash, one of the injured individuals informed the police about the deaths at their home, prompting an immediate investigation.

Initially, Pranay and Prasun claimed that their family had entered into a suicide pact and had collectively consumed porridge mixed with sleeping pills. However, police now suspect that the brothers were deliberately trying to mislead investigators.

“It seems that they were trying to hide something. Once they are declared medically fit to speak, our officers will begin questioning them,” a senior police official stated.

Forensic investigation and CCTV footage analysis

A forensic team from Kolkata Police has collected crucial evidence, including samples from the bathroom, washbasin, and rooms where the bodies were found. Additionally, authorities have seized CCTV footage from the Tangra residence, which could provide critical insights into the events leading up to the crime.

“This footage will be essential in determining the family’s activities prior to the crime. It will help us identify visitors and their potential involvement over the past week,” the officer added.

Vehicle examination and crash analysis

Investigators are also examining the route taken by the car before the crash, which occurred around 3:15 AM on February 19.

Authorities have seized a set of 12 keys—most belonging to the Tangra residence—along with a bloodstained blue button found in the backseat of the car and multiple bloodstains inside the vehicle. Further forensic tests will determine whether the blood belongs to the deceased victims or the surviving family members.

Preliminary examinations confirm that the vehicle had no mechanical defects that could have led to the accident, ruling out an unintended crash. “The car covered some distance in the city before the crash, but we need to gather more information regarding its speed and precise route,” the officer explained.

Family’s financial troubles

Investigators are also looking into the family’s financial distress as a possible motive for the crime. The family owned Protective Leather Gloves Pvt Ltd, a tannery business that suffered significant losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to police sources and reports from the Times of India, the mounting financial strain may have played a role in the unfolding tragedy.

As the investigation progresses, Kolkata Police are piecing together the events that led to this gruesome crime, seeking answers to the many unresolved questions surrounding this case. The surviving family members are expected to face rigorous interrogation once their medical condition improves.
