In a dramatic twist that has rocked public trust, a Kolkata Police constable was arrested for his alleged involvement in the ₹2.5 crore robbery case in the Entally area on May 5.
The constable, Mintu Sarkar — posted with the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police — was arrested on Tuesday night after being detained for questioning.
Mintu, a resident under the jurisdiction of the Jaipur Police Station in South Dinajpur, is the seventh accused to be arrested in the case.
His name reportedly emerged during the interrogation of six others already in custody.
According to police sources, Mintu confessed to his role in the crime following sustained questioning.
The incident took place on May 5 afternoon when two employees of a foreign exchange agency were en route to deposit the money to a bank via taxi. According to the complaint, two individuals forcibly entered the vehicle and diverted it to a deserted area in Kamardanga, where the money was looted before the perpetrators fled the scene.
Investigators managed to recover ₹71.19 lakh in connection with the case. The arrest of a serving police constable, however, raised serious concerns about corruption and criminal infiltration within law enforcement ranks.
No official statement has yet been issued by senior Kolkata Police officials, but the constable was produced in court on Wednesday and he was remanded to police custody for four days for further interrogation.
