In a dramatic late-night development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Shantanu Sinha Biswas, a Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kolkata Police, following nearly 11 hours of sustained interrogation at the CGO Complex. According to ED sources, Biswas was being questioned in connection with money laundering linked to a high-profile case.
Investigators alleged that he failed to cooperate with the inquiry and did not provide satisfactory responses during the prolonged questioning session, leading to his arrest. Biswas is scheduled to be produced before a court on Friday.
The development triggered significant commotion earlier in the day when news broke of his appearance at the ED office. Tight security arrangements were enforced outside the CGO Complex, while eyewitnesses reported that the senior police officer managed to enter the premises while evading media attention.
Sources within the central agency revealed that multiple summonses had previously been issued to Biswas, who also served as the Officer-in-Charge of Kalighat Police Station, in connection with the case. However, he allegedly failed to comply on several occasions, prompting the ED to issue a lookout notice against him.

Investigators further stated that Biswas had been summoned not only in Kolkata but also in Delhi in relation to multiple cases, including allegations of financial irregularities and administrative links. His statement is considered crucial to the ongoing probe.
The case has already seen the arrest of Joy Kamdar, a businessman from Behala, who is believed to be linked to the network operated by strongman Sona Pappu. The ED suspects that Biswas maintained associations with the key accused.
In addition to this case, Biswas is also facing allegations in a separate sand-smuggling investigation. Earlier in April, he was summoned in connection with that case as well, but his lawyer appeared on his behalf.
Last month, acting on leads in the Sona Pappu case, ED officials conducted an extensive search at Biswas’s residence on Fern Road. He, along with his two sons, was summoned the following day but reportedly failed to appear.
