BJP’s West Bengal president, Sukanta Mazumdar, has accused the Kolkata police of destroying evidence during the initial five-day investigation into the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Speaking to mediapersons on Wednesday, Mazumdar condemned what he described as an attempt to 'malign the victim's family', stating that he would visit them to offer support.
"It is shameful to malign the family. That is why I will go to their house and meet them... For 5 days, when Kolkata police were investigating the case, evidence was destroyed because of which the kind of justice that should have been given was not given," he asserted.
The case has attracted significant public attention, with doctors and medical workers calling for the death penalty for the convict, Sanjoy Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court on January 20.
On the same day, the victim’s parents withdrew their plea before the Supreme Court, seeking a fresh investigation into the incident.
The plea had been filed as an Intervention Application (IA) in a suo motu case registered by the apex court in August last year, shortly after the incident.
The Supreme Court, after reviewing submissions made in the affidavit, advised Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy to exercise caution in her arguments, given that a conviction had already been secured against the sole accused.
The court suggested that the plea be withdrawn and a fresh one filed if necessary, given that the original plea was filed before the trial and conviction.
Following the trial court’s decision, calls have intensified for a reinvestigation into the case, amid concerns about the conduct of the initial police inquiry.
Mazumdar’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate, as political and social pressure mounts for harsher punishment on one hand and further scrutiny of the investigation process on the other.
