Kolkata Police took strict action against the use of banned firecrackers during the Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations, arresting 292 people for using illicit fireworks and other disorderly conduct.
According to a police officer, over 500 kg of banned firecrackers were seized on Thursday alone.
Following widespread violations, the force has vowed to continue crackdowns in the coming days.
"This kind of checking and arrest would continue even today and for a couple of days to keep a tab on such kind of menace," stated an IPS officer.
Arrests on Thursday included 117 individuals for setting off prohibited fireworks and an additional 175 for unruly behaviour.
Police had also detained 68 people and confiscated nearly 4,000 kg of banned fireworks in earlier raids as the festive season began. Despite warnings, illegal fireworks were observed across various areas, challenging the authorities’ extensive awareness campaigns against firecracker use.
Kolkata Police have deployed additional patrols city-wide to ensure public safety and curb further disturbances related to banned firecrackers in the coming days.
