The Kolkata Police suspended two of its senior officers — Deputy Commissioner (DC) North-3 Bidhan Saha and DC Port-2 Parthapratim Das — over allegations of posting controversial comments and videos on social media. The action is seen as part of a broader effort to maintain discipline.
Sources within Lalbazar, the Kolkata police headquarters, said that the decision followed concerns that the officers’ online activities could tarnish the image of the police force and raise questions about administrative impartiality. The matter came under scrutiny after reports surfaced that both officers had shared objectionable content on social media platforms.
According to internal sources, the controversy has roots in a 2025 incident when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government was in power and a political rally was called by the then opposition BJP. During that time, discussions in an internal Kolkata Police WhatsApp group allegedly turned political. It is claimed that Das made offensive remarks targeting Suvendu Adhikari, who was then the Leader of Opposition, with Saha reportedly endorsing those statements.
Although the issue did not come to light at the time, it resurfaced following a change in the state’s political landscape. After Adhikari assumed the office of the Chief Minister, several past records and communications were revisited. The alleged 2025 conversation eventually reached the state administrative headquarters at Nabanna, bringing the matter into focus.
The development comes shortly after Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nanda issued a directive urging all senior officers to exercise caution in their use of social media. He stressed that personal opinions or posts should not undermine the neutrality of the administration or damage the force’s reputation. Officers were instructed to act responsibly before sharing any content online.
Following these instructions, Lalbazar reportedly began monitoring the social media activity of its personnel more closely. The allegations against the two Deputy Commissioners emerged during this period of internal review, prompting swift departmental action.
The suspensions are part of a wider pattern of disciplinary measures within the force. Last month, an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a constable attached to Shyampukur Police Station were suspended for alleged negligence of duty while on PCR van duty. A departmental inquiry was initiated after the incident was reported to the Lalbazar Control Room.
Sources within police circles indicate that the current administration has adopted a strict “zero-tolerance” policy toward misconduct, corruption, dereliction of duty, and breaches of discipline. The action against two high-ranking officers is being viewed as a clear signal that no one is exempt from accountability.
