A South Kolkata college campus has become the centre of a grave sexual assault investigation after a young woman was allegedly gangraped by three men, two current students and a former student, inside a classroom on Wednesday evening.

The shocking crime, which reportedly occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm, has drawn fierce criticism and renewed concerns over campus safety in West Bengal’s capital. All three accused were arrested by police early on Friday, following a swift investigation launched after the survivor filed a formal complaint.

According to the complainant, herself a student of the same college, she was lured into a classroom under the pretext of a discussion concerning the post of General Secretary (GS) of the students' union. Once inside, she was sexually assaulted by the three accused.

Kolkata Police arrested two of the suspects—third-semester students—from near Siddharth Shankar Shishu Roy Udyan at Talbagan Crossing on Thursday night. Acting on leads obtained during interrogation, officers apprehended the third accused, described as a former student and local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, from his residence in the early hours of Friday. He is believed to be the main perpetrator.

All three suspects' mobile phones have been seized for forensic analysis. A police forensic team has also sealed off the classroom believed to be the crime scene, and samples are being collected to support the ongoing investigation.

The survivor has undergone medical examination at Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital. Her formal statement has been recorded under legal supervision.

Several questions remain unanswered—how did a former student gain access to the campus after hours? Why was the crime not detected by security personnel or authorities until after the fact? College authorities have yet to make any public statement on the incident.

The three accused are expected to be produced in court on Friday afternoon, with police planning to seek custody for further interrogation.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to X to condemn the gangrape, calling it “horrific”. “The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded,” he wrote, drawing parallels to the 2023 rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

Condemning the incident, Bharatiya Janata Party’s state president, Sukanta Majumdar, said, “The state capital is witnessing another unthinkable incident after last year’s gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Hospital. The incident reflects the state’s deteriorating law and order situation.
