A Kuki civil society group in Manipur has lifted a blockade of highways, temporarily ending a week of unrest in Kangpokpi district. The Kuki tribes had been demanding the removal of central security forces from the area after they moved in to destroy bunkers on the hills.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), the Kuki group, called off the blockade after clashes occurred between protesters and security forces at the district commissioner’s office and the superintendent of police’s office.
During these protests, the Superintendent of Police (SP), an IPS officer, was injured. Kuki militants armed with automatic weapons were also seen walking on the road.
In response, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla ordered the state’s Director General of Police, Rajiv Singh, to prioritise the safety and security of the people.
The Governor also instructed the army and paramilitary officers to fully cooperate with the administration in maintaining law and order. This followed a security meeting held in Imphal, where the Governor reviewed the situation, particularly in border areas.
