Manipur Police, in a joint operation with the 38 Assam Rifles, arrested Lalchuoilo, a 48-year-old Kuki-Zo militant, from the banks of the Barak River near Tuisolen in Jiribam district on Thursday.
Lalchuoilo, an active member of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) [HPC(D)] group, was found with explosive materials and narcotics during the operation.
HPC(D) is one of the Kuki-Zo militant groups that had earlier signed a Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government. According to police, the arrested militant is a resident of Lungthuilen village in Pherzawl district.
The joint team seized 20 explosive sticks, 11 detonators, one meter of safety fuse, and 44 soap cases containing 457 grams of a suspected narcotic substance.
This recovery follows recent security concerns after Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were discovered in Jiribam district, where an explosion occurred last month, although no injuries were reported.
In a separate operation on Friday, Manipur Police, along with the 18 Assam Rifles and forest officials, destroyed 90 acres of illegal poppy plantations in the Phalee hill range of Ukhrul district. The team also demolished 12 huts connected to the cultivation. An FIR has been registered in connection with this action.
These operations highlight the ongoing efforts to address militancy in Manipur, manage Kuki-Zo community tensions, and combat issues like narcotics trafficking and illegal poppy cultivation.
The crackdown comes amidst broader security challenges in the region, including ethnic conflicts and insurgent activities.
Manipur police and regional security forces continue to intensify actions against militants and illegal activities as part of their mission to restore peace and stability in the state.
