The encounter between the security forces and terrorists in the Akhal area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its 4th day on Monday, officials said. The intermittent gunfire and blasts were reportedly heard during the previous night, they said.
According to sources, the operation, which started on Friday, is going on in the difficult forest terrain, hampering the operational capabilities of the forces.
So far, according to initial reports, two terrorists have been killed in the operation, while security forces have confirmed the killing of one terrorist as the operation was going on.
Sources said only one body was recovered from the site, while three army personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. The official added that the security forces have pushed in Rudra attack helicopters, drones, and elite Para Special Forces to track down the hiding terrorists.
“The cordon has been further tightened, and all entry and exit points leading to the area have been sealed,” an official told reporters here.
He said the ongoing operation is being monitored at the highest level by senior army and police officials on the ground.
The security forces have further strengthened the grid by deploying additional reinforcements as forces continue their search for the remaining terrorists believed to be hiding in the dense forest areas.
“The terrain is highly treacherous, which is slowing down the advance, but the operation will continue until the area is fully sanitised,” the official added.
The operation is still in progress.
