Kolkata witnessed a sea of humanity on Sunday as lakhs of people from across West Bengal converged in the city for the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s mega rally.
This event marks the party's first significant show of strength following their remarkable performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
TMC supporters began arriving from distant districts two days prior, setting up camps in various parts of the city. The anticipation surrounding this rally is high, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to outline the party's national-level blueprint from the stage.
Adding to the excitement, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is also likely to address the gathering, according to TMC leaders.
"The July 21 Martyrs' Day rally holds a special place in our hearts. We dedicate this day to our martyrs. As our party supremo Mamata Banerjee said, this year we will dedicate this rally to our victory in the Lok Sabha polls," stated a senior TMC leader.
Held annually at Esplanade, the heart of Kolkata, the rally commemorates the 13 Congress workers who were allegedly killed in police firing in 1993 during a protest against the then CPI(M)-led Left Front government.
Banerjee, who was the state Youth Congress chief at the time, led the protest, solidifying her role as a significant political force in the state.
