Traffic came to a standstill after a landslide near the entrance of the Thalout Tunnel on the Mandi-Kullu National Highway around noon on Monday. The incident left hundreds of vehicles stranded inside the tunnel. This comes amid the ongoing monsoon havoc in Himachal Pradesh, where relentless rainfall has triggered landslides and road closures across districts like Mandi and Kullu.
Local authorities, in coordination with the police and NHAI teams, are on the ground working to clear debris and restore traffic movement. The IMD has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with the risk of flash floods and further landslides in the region until July 5.
As of June 29, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported 129 blocked roads statewide, including 44 in Mandi district alone. Commuters are strongly advised to avoid the Mandi-Kullu stretch and to check for updates before traveling.
The state has already reported 20 monsoon-related fatalities, with estimated damages exceeding ₹75.4 crore since June 20. Authorities are urging both residents and tourists to remain vigilant, stay away from riverbanks, and follow all safety advisories as the heavy rains continue.
