A massive landslide hit Inner Akhara bazaar in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district early Thursday morning, burying nine people under heavy mud and debris, officials said. Triggered by days of nonstop rain, the landslide created panic and destruction in the area. Superintendent of Police Kullu, Kathikeyan Gokulachandran, confirmed that one body has been recovered from the site. Three people were pulled out in a critical condition and taken to the Regional Hospital in Kullu for treatment.
Rescue teams from the District Disaster Management Authority, local police, and district administration are working to trace the five people still missing. The landslide struck two residential houses in the crowded market area, catching residents unaware in the early hours.
Emergency teams have been on the ground since morning, but their work is being severely hampered by poor weather and the dangerous terrain.
Earlier, another landslide hit the same area just a day earlier, on Wednesday, in which two people were buried. They are still missing despite ongoing search efforts.
The back-to-back incidents highlight the rising threat of landslides in Himachal Pradesh’s hilly regions, worsened by heavy monsoon rains. Many parts of the state have seen similar disasters this season, with huge damage to homes, shops, and public infrastructure.
Authorities have warned residents living in vulnerable slopes and low-lying areas to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel to risky zones. Rescue and relief teams are keeping a close watch as the situation continues to unfold.
