A leopard that had been terrorising Gajald village in Pauri district was killed by the forest department on Wednesday night. The animal had created fear in the area for days.
As per an official statement, a team of special hunters was deployed by the department and killed the leopard on the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s instructions.
The CM had taken note of the leopard attacks in the region and directed officials to act quickly. The order pushed the forest teams to respond immediately.
After this, the forest department, local administration and hunters carried out a joint operation. They neutralised the leopard, believed to have attacked a child and a 45-year-old man who later died.
Garhwal Forest Division DFO Abhimanyu Singh said the leopard was shot at around 9 pm. He added that DNA samples will be taken to confirm if it is the same leopard responsible for the attacks.
After the two attacks in early December, villagers were angry and anxious. A team of senior officials led by Principal Secretary (Forest) R.K. Sudhanshu later visited the area and met the affected families.
The government has now assured villagers that patrolling and vigilance will be increased in the area. The aim is to prevent similar animal attacks in the future.
