Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday joined the 10th Muharram procession in Srinagar as mourners took to the streets to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
LG Sinha, despite an immense crowd-filled street, walked alongside Mourners at Bota Kadal on Sunday morning.
The local mourners also welcomed him and exchanged greetings as the procession moved forward on the designated route.
He was also accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir VK Bidhuri, Inspector General of Police Kashmir VK Birdi, SSP Srinagar, and other senior civil and police officers.
The 10th of Muharram, known as Youm-e-Ashura, holds significant religious meaning for Muslims, particularly the Shia community around the world.
The day is celebrated in remembrance of Prophet Muhammad’s Grandson and his companions who were martyred in the battle of Karbala in Iraq.
Earlier this week, on Friday, the administration, on the day of 8th Muharram, permitted the procession to carry along on the traditional route from Guru Bazar to Dalgate.
The decision received overwhelming appreciation from the Shia community, along with several religious leaders and civil societies alike.
The administration ensured adequate security, medical support, and traffic arrangements during the Ashura procession. Senior officials monitored the event on the ground to facilitate peaceful observance.
