Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir during a meeting with top security officials at the Lok Bhawan. The LG held a similar meeting on Sunday when protests erupted across UT soon after the news of killing of Khamenei was confirmed.
As the situation continues to remain tense amid restrictions and an alert security grid, the meeting was again held on Tuesday to gather feedback. “The lieutenant governor held in-depth deliberations on the prevailing security scenario in the UT of Jammu Kashmir,” an official spokesman said. The meeting was held in the wake of widespread protests in Kashmir and parts of the Jammu region against the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint strike by the US and Israeli forces.
The meeting was attended by GoC-in-C Northern Command Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, DGP Nalin Prabhat, GoC 15 Corps Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava and MGGS Northern Command Major General Balbir Singh
“Restrictions continued on Tuesday as a precautionary step. Necessary measures are in place to ensure peace,” the officials said, adding that security forces were deployed at sensitive locations across the Valley.
On Monday, processions and rallies were held in several parts of Srinagar, as well as in Budgam, Bandipora, Sonawari, Pulwama and other areas of south and north Kashmir. Participants carried black flags and portraits of Khamenei while raising anti-US and anti-Israeli slogans and expressing solidarity with Iran.
In Srinagar, gatherings were reported from multiple localities, with security personnel stationed at key intersections to prevent them from marching to the city centre. Concertina wires and barricades had been placed at important intersections leading into the city centre. Similar rallies were witnessed in interior areas and district headquarters, where police presence was intensified.
A massive and emotionally charged protest was witnessed in Magam town of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, as hundreds gathered on the second day of mourning over the killing of Khamenei.
Men and women assembled in large numbers, turning parts of the town into a sea of protesters expressing grief and solidarity. Participants carried portraits, black flags and banners while raising slogans. Women were seen actively participating in the demonstration alongside men.
