Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said the administration would take all necessary steps to ensure the reconstruction of homes destroyed in Kishtwar.
He made these remarks while taking stock of the situation and ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the cloudburst-hit Chositi village in the district.
The massive flash floods destroyed nearly two dozen houses, government buildings and temple compounds, while killing 60 people and leaving hundreds more missing.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that hundreds of people were swept away by the floods and are believed to be trapped under rubble, boulders, wooden logs and mud. Sinha also directed officials to ensure uninterrupted supply of essentials to the affected people.
In a post on X, he said, “Spoke to senior officials and took stock of the rescue and relief operations at Chositi, Kishtwar. I will ensure the reconstruction of homes damaged in flash floods.”
The disaster struck between 12 pm and 1 pm near the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata temple. It flattened a makeshift market, a community kitchen site for the pilgrimage, and a security outpost.
Earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced relief ex gratia for the victims of the Kishtwar flood disaster. He said his government would provide all necessary support to the affected families, adding that the government stands with them in this hour of grief.
