Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has directed the police to prepare a list of drug peddlers under each station and then take decisive action to dismantle drug networks within a period of one month.
He said the administration is set to take stringent action against drug syndicates and people involved in the sale as well as purchase of illegal substances.
The authorities have been ordered to revoke driving licences, Aadhaar cards and arms licences issued to people allegedly involved in the drug trade across
Jammu and Kashmir.
While speaking at an event after launching a 100-day intensive anti-drug campaign — Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir — in the Kathua district, Sinha said, “We will crack down hard on traffickers and criminals, but those trapped need empathy and mercy. If a youth strays, we help him recover.”
He directed police officials to prepare a list and then focus on the elimination of such syndicates in the UT. He warned the syndicates: “If you don’t give up or stop using, purchasing or selling contraband substances, we will stop issuing any useful documents to you.”
Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, he said, “We will confiscate all movable and immovable assets, freeze bank accounts and launch exhaustive financial probes.”
He also announced a comprehensive plan of action to help people in need of urgent attention, saying, “We have crafted a well-planned 100-day roadmap.
During the first month, there will be awareness and mobilisation programmes, community and family penetration will be done in the second month, while month three will be dedicated to cementing sustainability.”
The LG said the campaign’s cornerstone is compassionate rehabilitation.
