Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday paid rich tributes to General Zorawar Singh, one of India’s highly decorated military commanders and strategists.

General Zorawar Singh was martyred on December 12, 1841, in the Battle of Toyo (Western Tibet) while defending the Dogra Empire, which ruled Jammu and Kashmir at the time.

While paying tribute, Sinha said, “General Zorawar inspired generations by igniting passion towards broader ideals.”

During a commemorative event in Jammu, the LG reflected on the courage and military leadership of General Singh during battles in Ladakh, Baltistan, Gilgit and Skardu. He highlighted Singh’s pivotal role in the expansion of the Dogra Empire.

General Zorawar Singh fought approximately 20–21 major battles during his tenure as commander. He fought and conquered Ladakh (1834–36) and Baltistan (1840), and invaded Western Tibet (1841), winning every battle until his death at Toyo on December 12, 1841.

On the occasion, Sinha urged the youth to introspect in their lives and help others in need to build a more just and peaceful society. He said, “The Narendra Modi government is dedicating and honouring the brave warriors of the country who set an example with courage and bravery on the battlefield.”

Among the prominent political and defence officials present at the event were Vikram Randhawa, Member of the Legislative Assembly from Bahu; Devinder Singh Kaluria, Chairman of the General Zorawar Singh Memorial Education and Charitable Trust; Trustees Riya Kaluria and Diksha Kaluria; Lt Gen RK Sharma (Retd.); and Major General Goverdhan Singh Jamwal (Retd.), besides others.
