Parts of Punjab and Haryana experienced light rainfall and overcast conditions on Sunday, bringing a welcome reprieve from the prolonged spell of scorching heat. After days of maximum temperatures soaring between 41°C and 45°C, several areas in both states saw a slight dip in mercury levels, with temperatures settling closer to the seasonal average.
Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded light drizzles and a maximum temperature of 37.7°C. According to the local Meteorological Department, Patiala and Ferozepur in Punjab also reported light rainfall.
In Punjab, Patiala recorded a maximum of 34.1°C, Amritsar 39.5°C, Ludhiana 38.6°C, Pathankot 39.8°C, Ferozepur and Gurdaspur 39°C each, and Bathinda remained on the higher side at 42.2°C.
Meanwhile in Haryana, isolated showers were reported in Narnaul and Rohtak. Narnaul recorded 38.5°C, Rohtak 34.6°C, Karnal 34°C, Ambala 36.5°C, while Hisar stood at 39°C. Sirsa remained the hottest location, logging a high of 41.4°C.
The Meteorological Department noted a significant dip in average maximum temperatures compared to Saturday—down by 4.9°C in Punjab and by 6.3°C in Haryana.
The changing weather brought brief relief to residents and raised hopes for a more sustained break from the heatwave conditions prevailing over the past week.
