Gusty winds accompanied by rain and lightning caused significant damage in north and central Kashmir on Sunday night, even as the Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall and lightning strikes over the next 48 hours.
In a major incident in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, nearly 90 sheep and goats were killed after a lightning strike hit a nomadic flock in the upper reaches of the Kangan area.
The incident wiped out a large portion of the livestock belonging to a nomadic family, which was their only source of income. The family had recently migrated from Jammu to Kashmir in search of grazing lands for summer.
In north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, heavy rainfall along with strong winds caused extensive damage to infrastructure and rooftops. Several trees were also uprooted in neighbouring Baramulla district. Gusty winds damaged orchards, particularly affecting the cherry crop.
Meanwhile, the MeT office in Srinagar has issued a fresh advisory regarding the possibility of lightning strikes, gusty winds and rainfall across widespread parts of the Valley. Cloudy weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days, while temperatures have dropped significantly across the Kashmir Valley.
