Lightning strikes took four lives in Purulia; eight injured

According to reports, thunderstorms accompanied by rain struck several parts of the district on Tuesday afternoon, in line with the weather office’s forecast. The lightning strikes occurred in different areas, leading to multiple casualties.

Four people were killed and eight injured in lightning strikes across West Bengal's Purulia as thunderstorms lashed the district, officials said.


At least four people were killed and eight others injured in multiple lightning strike incidents across Purulia district as thunderstorms lashed parts of South Bengal over the past few days, officials said on Tuesday. All the injured were rescued and admitted to Purulia Government Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Post-mortem examinations of the deceased are scheduled for Wednesday.
 
According to reports, thunderstorms accompanied by rain struck several parts of the district on Tuesday afternoon, in line with the weather office’s forecast. The lightning strikes occurred in different areas, leading to multiple casualties.
 
In the jurisdiction of Jaipur Police Station, four women labourers were struck by lightning while planting paddy seedlings in a field. They were rushed to the Jaipur Block Health Centre, where one of them, Sunita Gop (50), a resident of Talmu village, was declared dead. The others were referred to Purulia Medical College for advanced treatment.
 
 
In a separate incident, Gour Gorai (70), a resident of Rangadi village under Balarampur Police Station, died after being struck by lightning while grazing cattle in a field. Another fatality was reported from Lachmanpur village under Arsha Police Station, where Bharati Mahato (51) died after being struck by lightning while returning home after grazing goats. Another woman, Jaba Mahato, sustained injuries in the same incident.
 
In Kanchanpur village, also under Arsha Police Station, Sachinath Mahato (45) died after being struck by lightning while working in a field, while another villager, Bikash Mudi, was injured.
 
Additionally, a mother and daughter from Palpal village and a man from Hetjari village were also injured in separate lightning strike incidents in the same area.
 
Officials said that in the Arsha Police Station area alone, two people lost their lives and five others were injured due to lightning strikes. Authorities are monitoring the situation as intermittent thunderstorms continue across the district.
