ongress candidate from Julana Vinesh Phogat speaks to the media ahead of the Haryana Assembly election, in Jind, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024.

Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday said that the people of Haryana have supported her wrestling career and they will support her political journey as well.

Phogat will be contesting elections from Julana, Haryana. She inaugurated the party’s election office in the constituency and performed havan.

She has said, “These people have made us win in wrestling and they will make us win (in Haryana elections). We have never been able to do anything without God and elders, even today I am nothing without them.”

“I will go ahead only with their blessings… I am confident that they will support what is right as they have always done,” Phogat added.

On the other hand, Vinesh’s coach Mahavir Singh Phogat has shown discontent towards her decision to join politics and is saddened by the fact that she will not compete in the Olympics 2028.

“She did very well in the Paris Olympics but got disqualified in the final. It is my personal opinion that she could participate in the Olympics in 2028,” Mahavir added.

“A gold medal is my dream, she did not get it but the people of India gave her immense love and they had expected a Gold from her,” he continued.

“People were disheartened… The decision that she has taken, I am saddened by it that she had joined politics. But she could have taken this decision after the 2028 Olympics, it would have been better,” Mahavir said.

Mahavir also added that earlier, Vinesh had no plans of joining politics.

“There was no such planning earlier. Neither Bajrang nor Vinesh had this idea. I don’t know how Congress did it, but she had no intentions earlier to contest elections,” he added.

On September 6, Olympian wrestler Vinesh joined the Congress, giving the party a big boost ahead of the upcoming Haryana assembly elections.

Voting from the 90 assembly seats will take place on October 5th and vote counting will take place on October 8th.

In 2019, the BJP became the single largest party with 40 seats, while the Congress won 30.
