A 21-year-old man was killed after a lion attacked him in Gujarat's Amreli district, forest officials informed on Thursday. The incident occurred near Antaliya village when the victim, identified as Sohil Munjawar, and a group of youths allegedly entered a forest area, reportedly attempting to confront lions.
According to preliminary information, the group had ventured into the VD forest area in Lilia taluka when a lion suddenly attacked, reportedly during the animal’s mating season. Sohil sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee.
Forest and police personnel rushed to the site after receiving information. The body was later sent to a government hospital in Lilia for post-mortem.
Range Forest Officer Vatsal Pandya said initial findings indicate that three individuals were directly involved in the incident, while two others are being questioned as part of the investigation. “The entire incident is being investigated from every angle,” he said.
Officials confirmed that one lion has been tranquilised and captured following the attack. Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Chirag Amin stated that authorities are examining whether the animal may have been disturbed or provoked, particularly as the incident occurred during the mating period. The forest department has launched a detailed inquiry into the matter.
The incident adds to a series of recent attacks in the region. Officials noted that this is the seventh lion attack reported in Amreli district in the past one-and-a-half months. During this period, five people have lost their lives, and two others have been injured in separate incidents.
