A consignment of illegal liquor worth ₹10 lakh, intended to be smuggled into Bihar via the river route, was intercepted by police in Uttar Pradesh, officials confirmed on Tuesday. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.
Bairia Circle Officer Mohammad Faheem Qureshi stated that acting on a tip-off about liquor being transported to Bihar from Shivpur, the Dokati police set up a checkpoint approximately 100 meters ahead of the suspected location. When a vehicle approached, its driver attempted to flee after abandoning it, but the police acted swiftly and managed to apprehend him.
The arrested individual was identified as Sonu Baheliya, a 29-year-old resident of Ganga Pandey Ka Tola in the Reoti police station area of Ballia district.
Upon searching the vehicle, a Mahindra Bolero pickup, police discovered 200 cartons of English liquor. Each carton contained 48 bottles, amounting to a total of 1,728 liters of liquor valued at ₹10 lakh.
A case has been registered against the accused at Dokati police station under the Excise Act, and he has been sent to jail following legal proceedings. Authorities are continuing their investigation to trace the supply chain and identify other individuals involved in the smuggling network.
This seizure comes just two days after another major consignment of English liquor, worth ₹25 lakh, was confiscated near the Jayaprabha Setu police picket.
In that operation, police recovered 425 cartons containing a total of 3,672 liters of liquor. Two smugglers, identified as Amarjit Singh from Jayaprakash Nagar (Bhawan Tola) and Manjeet Verma from Singhachawar in the Gadwar police station area, were arrested in connection with the case.
The Uttar Pradesh Police have intensified their crackdown on liquor smuggling networks operating along the Bihar border, as the state has a stringent prohibition law in place.
Authorities are working to dismantle these illegal operations and prevent the smuggling of liquor into Bihar.
