The Saranda Forest region also holds significant cultural and livelihood importance for the local tribal communities who depend on its forests and minerals for their sustenance.

Local residents have launched a strong protest against the proposed move to declare the Saranda forest area a wildlife sanctuary in Jharkhand. The Saranda Bachao Samiti has vehemently opposed the decision and announced an “economic blockade” on November 16 in protest. Located in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, Saranda Forest is Asia’s largest Sal Forest, spread over nearly 820 sq km. Rich in biodiversity and mineral resources, it is home to elephants, leopards, and several rare species of flora and fauna.

The region also holds significant cultural and livelihood importance for the local tribal communities who depend on its forests and minerals for their sustenance.

At a representative meeting held on Sunday at Jamkundia Nayabazar in Chotanagara, the strategy for the agitation was finalized. Protesters warned that if the government does not roll back its decision, “not a single mineral stone will be allowed to move out of Saranda by road or rail.”

They said that before declaring Saranda a sanctuary, it is mandatory to obtain consent from the President and the Governor, since the region falls under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution.

They also said that the rights of tribal communities are constitutionally protected, and any such decision without the consent of local residents and the recommendation of the Tribal Advisory Council (TAC) violates the spirit of the Constitution.

Speakers at the meeting alleged that the process of declaring Saranda a sanctuary is being carried out hastily and under a conspiracy, which would adversely affect the rights of indigenous people over their jal, jungle aur zameen (water, forest, and land).

The meeting also resolved to form a joint organisation named the Kolhan-Porahat Saranda Bachao Samiti, aimed at safeguarding the natural resources of the region and protecting tribal rights.
