Jammu and Kashmir’s lone Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and state party president Mehraj Malik has withdrawn support to the National Conference-led government in J&K.
However, the withdrawal of his will have no impact on the government as the National Conference-Congress alliance has a majority on its own – 42 MLAs of NC and six of the Congress in the 90-seat assembly. The government also enjoys the support of five independent MLAs.
Malik wrote on X on Saturday: “I, Mehraj Malik, MLA from Doda, hereby withdraw my support to NC in the government coalition. This decision has been taken in the best interest of my people of Jammu and Kashmir whose trust and welfare will always be my top priority.”
Last year, the legislator had scripted history when he defeated BJP’s candidate, Gajay Singh Rana, from Doda assembly constituency by 4,538 votes in the assembly polls. His victory made Malik the first and only AAP candidate from J&K who won. He was made the UT president of AAP on March 21 this year.
