Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC) Chief Sajad Gani Lone is reportedly preparing to petition the Supreme Court to challenge Jammu and Kashmir’s police verification system.
The party contends that the process imposes “collective punishment” on entire families, referencing the Supreme Court’s recent "bulldozer judgment," which deemed the demolition of homes as punishment for an individual’s actions a form of collective punishment.
In a recent post on X, the JKPC stated, “Encouraged by the Bulldozer Judgment where the Supreme Court ruled it to be collective punishment against the family, the JKPC will approach the Supreme Court with a plea that the Police Verification system in J&K is a more chronic and serious case of collective punishment.”
The post further asserted that, under the guise of national security, the system often violates natural justice.
Lone also commented on the judgment, emphasising that adverse police verification due to a relative’s criminal record equates to a form of “collective punishment.”
He condemned the verification process as a “Kashmir-specific Stone Age justice” that unfairly impacts families for the actions of a single member.
