Lieutenant General Balbir Singh assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Chinar Corps (15 Corps) on Friday. Headquartered in Srinagar, the Chinar Corps is one of the most important formations of the Indian Army, responsible for guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and overseeing counter-terrorism and internal security operations across the Kashmir Valley.
Lt Gen Balbir Singh, a highly decorated officer, has taken over the reins at a time when the Jammu and Kashmir administration is focused on maintaining peace and stability following sustained counter-terror operations in recent years.
Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Major General General Staff (MGGS) at Northern Command. He has extensive experience in Jammu and Kashmir, having earlier commanded the 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles during 2018–19 and served as General Officer Commanding of Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) Victor in 2023.
He succeeds Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava of the Parachute Regiment, who had taken charge of the Chinar Corps on October 5, 2024, succeeding Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai.
Lt Gen Srivastava has now been appointed as the new Quartermaster General (QMG) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. The change reflects the Indian Army’s standard policy of rotational higher command appointments.
