Lucknow Metro on Monday introduced a QR-based ticketing system, enabling commuters to book and use tickets digitally for a smoother travel experience.
The facility was formally inaugurated at Hazratganj Metro Station by Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC).
Under the new system, passengers can book QR tickets through the official mobile application — Lucknow Metro Official (available on Play Store and iOS Store), Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), as well as ticket counters.
Tickets booked via the mobile app will be issued in digital QR format on passengers’ phones. Paper-based QR tickets can be collected from ticket counters and designated TVMs.
Commuters travelling with QR tickets can enter and exit stations by scanning the code at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates marked with yellow strips.
The metro administration has installed QR-enabled ticket vending machines at all stations. Each station has at least one QR-supported TVM and one QR-enabled ticket counter to ensure seamless access.

The new TVMs also support UPI payments. Existing machines will continue to offer token-based ticketing.
Speaking at the launch, Sushil Kumar said, “The launch of the QR-based ticketing system marks an important milestone in the journey of Lucknow Metro. This advanced system is based on the concept of 'Smart Travel', under which passengers can now book tickets from anywhere and enjoy a faster, simpler, and more convenient travel experience. This initiative is also in line with the vision of 'Digital India', where services are just ‘one tap away’, and digital platforms are bringing convenience closer to the common public.”
He added, “In line with the ‘One Nation, One Card’ vision, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) facility will soon be introduced in Lucknow in the next phase, following the model adopted in Kanpur and Agra. This will enable passengers to travel seamlessly across metro systems in the country where the NCMC facility is available.”
