The Ludhiana rural police on Sunday arrested the prime suspect involved in the firing incident outside Lakhe Wale Jewellers showroom near Rani Jhansi Chowk in Jagraon, Ludhiana. The arrest came after an encounter in which the accused sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
The suspect has been identified as Amrit Singh, also known as Labha, a resident of Malsian Wali Basti in Zira, Ferozepur district. During the operation, the police recovered a .32 bore pistol, two live cartridges, and a motorcycle from his possession.
Ludhiana Rural SSP Dr. Ankur Gupta stated that following the March 5 incident, multiple police teams were actively tracking the accused.
He was eventually apprehended in an intelligence-based operation carried out jointly by the CIA, Ludhiana rural police, and the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF). Authorities located him near the Jagraon-Sidhwan Bet Road, where they attempted to intercept him.
According to Gupta, as the police moved to apprehend him, the accused refused to surrender and instead fired three rounds at the officers, one of which struck a police vehicle. In response, the police retaliated in self-defense, and Amrit Singh was shot in the right leg. He was immediately transported to the local Civil Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
A case has been registered against him at the City Jagraon Police Station under Sections 125 and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
SSP Ankur Gupta reiterated Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against anti-social elements to ensure public safety.
