Maharashtra’s cabinet has cleared an ambitious infrastructure package, giving the nod to metro corridors, suburban rail expansions, major road projects, and a new High Court complex in Mumbai. The decisions are set to reshape connectivity across Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur while strengthening the state’s transport and civic framework.

A highlight of the approvals is the Metro Line-11 project linking Wadala, CSMT and Gateway of India in Mumbai, with an outlay of ₹23,487.51 crore. A ring metro for Thane, extensions of Pune Metro’s Line-2 and Line-4, and Phase-II of the Nagpur Metro also received sanction.

The cabinet also approved loans to support these undertakings, with the state assuming contingent liabilities, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a statement. In Pune, two new stations, Balajinagar and Bibwewadi, were cleared on the Swargate–Katraj metro corridor, alongside the relocation of Katraj station, requiring an additional investment of ₹683.11 crore.

On suburban rail, the government agreed to co-fund projects under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), phases 3, 3A and 3B, and finally resolved its participation in the Pune–Lonavala third and fourth line expansion. The ₹5,100-crore project, to be executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, will be shared equally between the Centre and the state. Maharashtra’s contribution of ₹2,550 crore will be supplemented by the Pune Municipal Corporation (₹510 crore), Pimpri–Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (₹510 crore) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (₹765 crore).

Officials said the suburban rail decision would help ease the rising passenger burden on Pune–Lonavala services. In Thane, a new elevated corridor connecting the city with Navi Mumbai International Airport was cleared on a public–private partnership model through CIDCO.

Nagpur, too, features prominently in the plan. The cabinet gave in-principle approval for developing an International Business and Finance Centre under the ‘New Nagpur’ project by acquiring 692 hectares of land in Hingna taluka. The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority has also been tasked with developing an outer ring road along with four truck and bus terminals.

Away from transport, the government sanctioned ₹3,750 crore for a new High Court complex at Bandra (East), Mumbai. A policy for utilising fly-ash generated by Mahagenco’s thermal power plants was also adopted.

Social welfare measures included raising monthly assistance under the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana and Shravanbal scheme for persons with disabilities from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. In education, the cabinet resolved to replace the state-run Golden Jubilee Tribal Pre-Matric Scholarship with the Centre’s scheme for Scheduled Tribe students of Classes 9 and 10.

The cabinet also cleared amendments to the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, and the Factories Act, 1948, signalling a broad sweep of decisions that span infrastructure, welfare, industry and education.
