Maharashtra's Information Technology and Cultural Affairs Minister, Advocate Ashish Shelar, has promised state support to Marathi schools in the United States, such as availability of curriculum and examination frameworks.
On a trip to the Bay Area in San Francisco as part of his US tour, Shelar sat down with office-bearers of the Maharashtra Mandal, which manages Marathi schools in the area. These community-based institutions, spearheaded by dedicated members of the Marathi diaspora, concentrate on imparting the Marathi language, culture, history and folkways to the younger generation.
The Bay Area school, which has been running since 2005, now teaches about 300 students in Marathi.

There are over 50 Marathi schools operating in the US through community volunteers. Representatives at the meeting informed Shelar that official sanction by the government of Maharashtra — with a formal curriculum and exam structure — would make teaching, certification and administration easier.
In turn, Shelar vowed to speak with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and School Education Minister Dada Bhuse regarding the issue. He promised the Mandal that the government would provide the schools with complete cooperation in the form of official curriculum materials and recommendation letters to ease the functioning of the schools.
