Maharashtra has reported its first death from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, after a patient in Pune passed away.
The number of GBS cases in Pune has risen to 101, raising concerns among health officials.
The death occurred in a private hospital in Solapur. According to reports, the patient had diarrhoea and symptoms of cough and cold. He was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital on January 18.
After his condition improved, he was moved to a regular room. However, his health worsened when he started having difficulty breathing, and he died after being readmitted to the ICU.

Pune is facing a rise in GBS cases, with 28 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 101. Currently, 16 of the patients are on ventilators. Among the cases, 19 are children under the age of 9, and 23 are in the 50-80 age range. Lab tests have found the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, which is a known cause of GBS.
In response, local authorities have stepped up water testing, especially in areas with the highest number of cases. Tests done on Saturday found high levels of E. coli bacteria in a well near Khadakwasla Dam, which is Pune’s main water source.
However, officials are still investigating whether this well is currently being used.
