Gangapuri Maharaj, famously known as Chhotu Baba, has not bathed in 32 years and has no plans to take part in the traditional bathing rituals of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, set to begin this month in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Chhotu Baba, now 57-years-old and standing 3 feet 8 inches tall, shared his reason for abstaining from bathing. “I haven’t bathed in 32 years because I have an unfulfilled wish,” he said. “I will not bathe in the Ganga until my wish is granted.”
Despite his unique stance, Gangapuri Maharaj expressed his joy at attending the Maha Kumbh Mela. Calling the event a “Milan Mela,” he emphasised its spiritual significance, describing it as a place where souls connect.
A revered figure from Kamakhya Peeth, Chhotu Baba is a prominent presence at this once-in-12-years gathering.
Bathing Rituals at the Maha Kumbh
The Maha Kumbh Mela is known for its sacred bathing rituals, especially the Shahi Snan (royal baths). These rituals are considered an essential part of the festival, symbolizing spiritual purification. This year, the Shahi Snan will occur on key dates:
- January 14: Makar Sankranti
- January 29: Mauni Amavasya
- February 3: Basant Panchami
While millions will immerse themselves in the holy waters of the Ganga during these rituals, Chhotu Baba’s decision to refrain highlights his unique spiritual journey.
