The flood situation in Odisha became very crucial as the discharge from the Mahanadi river has kept on increasing day by day. It is expected that more than 9.5 lakh cusecs of flood discharge will flow down through Mundali, hence there are warnings about increased vigilance in the downstream regions prone to floods.
The discharge is bound to affect many important rivers and their distributaries such as Luna, Karandia, Chitrotpala, Paika, Devi, Kandal, Kushabhadra, Bhargavi, and Daya rivers. The warnings about precaution are being issued for the low-lying districts where Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara would suffer most due to the flood discharge. Parts of Cuttack district, particularly the Banki and Athagarh areas, are also facing potential inundation.
By Thursday evening, 397,024 cusecs of water had been discharged from the Mahanadi at the Jobra Anicut, where the gauge reading stood at 21.20 metres.
The pressure on local infrastructure was made evident late on Wednesday night when a breach occurred along the Mahanadi embankment at Jodum in Badamba, causing floodwaters to submerge adjacent agricultural land. As water levels kept rising, local authorities enforced restrictive measures under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) from Thursday at the Dhabaleswar, Bhattarika, and Singhanath shrines to manage safety risks.
