Maharashtra has recorded two COVID-19-related deaths since January this year, both in Mumbai and involving patients with comorbidities, the state health department announced on Tuesday.

According to an official release issued by the department, one of the deceased was suffering from nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcaemia seizure, while the other was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Between January and May, a total of 6,066 swab samples were tested for the coronavirus across the state, of which 106 returned positive results. Of these, 101 were from Mumbai, with the rest detected in Pune, Thane, and Kolhapur districts.

As of now, 52 patients are under treatment for mild symptoms of COVID-19, while 16 are being treated at hospitals, the department said.

"A spike in COVID-19 cases is not only being seen in Maharashtra, but also in other states and even other countries,” the release stated.

National COVID-19 Overview

As of 19 May 2025, India has reported a total of 4,45,11,240 recovered cases and 5,33,666 deaths since the onset of the pandemic. Currently, there are 257 active COVID-19 cases nationwide, with Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu reporting the highest numbers.

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 6.9 million deaths and more than 770 million confirmed cases as of May 2025. Recent surges in cases have been observed in parts of Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand, primarily driven by the JN.1 variant and its sublineages.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

First identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the virus rapidly spread worldwide, leading the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a global pandemic in March 2020.

Symptoms and Transmission

COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell. Less common symptoms are sore throat, headache, and diarrhoea, while severe cases can lead to difficulty breathing, chest pain, or loss of speech or mobility.

The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face.

Preventive measures include wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, frequent handwashing, and vaccination. Vaccines have been developed and administered worldwide, significantly reducing the severity and mortality of the disease.

Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, with severe cases requiring hospitalisation and supportive care, such as oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation.
