The Chief Minister of Odisha State, Mohan Charan Majhi, has officially launched an elaborate economic master plan for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip Economic Region (BCPPER), with the aim to build this economic zone into a powerhouse for development and prosperity.
In his description of the importance of this initiative, the Chief Minister said that it is really the “laboratory for growth” in the state of Odisha, “where the four distinct cities — each imparting its strength — would find their way to create a powerhouse that would not just benefit Odisha but the entire country.” This master plan includes Bhubaneswar’s IT hub, Cuttack’s business acumen, Puri’s tourism hotbed attraction, and Paradip with its industrial port facility.
The roadmap, which has been put together in association with NITI Aayog, comprises more than 80 particular projects in sectors ranging from biotechnology and textiles to chemicals and education. Majhi noted that the central government has already earmarked ₹5,000 crore for City Economic Regions (CER) in its latest budget, with NITI Aayog placing BCPPER among the top five initiatives nationwide. Currently, this region accounts for about 19 per cent of Odisha's economy, but the government has set a massive target: to push the region's economy to $500 billion by 2047.
NITI Aayog officials highlighted that the project is a central pillar for building a developed Odisha, placing it alongside major urban development schemes in Mumbai, Surat, Visakhapatnam, and Varanasi. They emphasised the urgency of implementing the plan to improve standard of living and boost the GDP share originating from urban areas.
