West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the Sandeshkhali violence, stating that those responsible for instigating the turmoil have been apprehended.
Banerjee's remarks coincided with Governor CV Ananda Bose's visit to the North 24 Parganas area to evaluate the law and order situation.
Banerjee emphasized that individuals are free to visit Sandeshkhali and disclosed that the state women's commission team had already conducted an assessment.
"Those who have instigated violence have been arrested," Banerjee confirmed, highlighting the government's proactive stance in addressing the issue.
Governor Bose expressed profound shock over the situation, describing it as "ghastly" and pledging unwavering support to the affected women in their pursuit of justice. "I cannot believe this could happen in Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore's land," Bose remarked, emphasising his commitment to uphold constitutional principles and enforce the law.
In response to the Sandeshkhali incident, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials faced a mob attack on January 5 while conducting searches at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh, who has been missing since then. Allegations of sexual harassment by Sheikh and his associates have been raised by women in the area.
Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari condemned the violation of human rights in Sandeshkhali, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
