West Bengal chief minister on Monday said in the Assembly that the Union government should send a proposal to the United Nations (UN) for sending a peacekeeping force to Bangladesh.
“The Centre has been silent on the Bangladesh issue for the past 10 days. If the Prime Minister cannot issue a statement, then the External Affairs Minister should. I urge the Centre to request the UN to send a peacekeeping force to Bangladesh,” said CM Banerjee, while addressing the House on the first day of the winter session.
The Bengal chief minister also urged the Centre to take measures to bring back the minorities facing atrocities in Bangladesh.
“We are ready to accept our men from Bangladesh and for this, if we are to survive on a single-course meal a day, we are ready for that. This is my submission in the House,” said CM Banerjee.
The chief minister also made it clear that her government cannot interfere in the affairs of a foreign country.
“The border between the two countries is manned by the BSF, which is under the Centre. But we have many families in Bengal whose relatives are in Bangladesh and they are concerned about their security. If the Centre takes any initiative, we are ready to accept our people willing to come to Bengal from Bangladesh,” added CM Banerjee.
The Speaker of the Assembly Biman Bandopadhyay said the chief minister’s proposal requesting the Centre to urge the UN to intervene would be sent to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office.
The UN sends a peacekeeping force to another country when the Security Council determines that it is the best way to address threats to international peace and security.
In several ways, it tries to prevent conflict, protecting civilians and restoring the rule of law.
Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged Mamata to prove what she said in the Assembly.
“This is not an issue to do politics. We are raising our voice in support of the minorities who are being attacked. I am requesting her to prove what the chief minister said in the Assembly,” said Adhikari, on his way to Petrapole border in North 24 Parganas to lead a demonstration.
