Mamata Banerjee on Saturday called for the overthrow of the government in Delhi while addressing supporters from her sit-in protest at Dharmatala in Kolkata. The West Bengal Chief Minister, speaking on the second day of the protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of electoral rolls in the state, launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mamata questioned their alleged arrogance. “Why are you so arrogant? You are in power at the mercy of N Chandrababu Naidu. The BJP should be cautious. If you overstep your limits, we will topple your government,” she said from the dharna stage.
Mamata also criticised the recent change of the West Bengal Governor, targeting the BJP over the move. Referring to R. N. Ravi, the former Governor of Tamil Nadu, she alleged that he had been brought in before the Assembly elections purposefully and described him as a “BJP cadre”.
The Chief Minister further referred to former West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, claiming she was aware of the reasons behind his removal but would not disclose them publicly. “I know why Bose was removed, but I will not say. All I can say is that he has been threatened,” she alleged from the protest stage.
Mamata also accused the BJP of not allowing constitutional authorities to complete their tenure, citing the earlier tenure of former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and claiming that a similar situation occurred during Bose’s time.
The protest at Dharmatala entered its second day on Saturday, with Mamata continuing to target the BJP on multiple issues, including allegations that the party was attempting to divide states for political advantage.
The dharna was called over the ongoing SIR process ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. Mamata has alleged that more than 60 lakh names were omitted after the publication of the final voter list, triggering widespread political controversy in the state.
She also announced a special protest programme on Sunday to mark International Women's Day, calling for demonstrations against the alleged removal of women’s names from the voter list and rising cooking gas prices.
Mamata said she would wear a white saree during the protest, while other participants would wear black as a mark of protest. She clarified that the programme would remain peaceful and was meant solely to register democratic protest.
