Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly refuted reports claiming that she personally took the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form from a Booth Level Officer (BLO) who visited her residence in Kalighat on Wednesday. The Chief Minister on Thursday dismissed the reports as “false propaganda,” clarifying that she has not yet filled out any form herself.
In a post on social media, Mamata wrote, “Yesterday the BLO in charge came to our neighborhood to do their specific work. Through work, he came to my residence office and found out how many voters are in the residence and gave them the forms. Until every person in Bengal fills the forms, I have not filled any form myself and will not do so.”
She alleged that some media outlets were deliberately spreading misleading news to create confusion among the public.
“This news is completely false, misleading and purposeful propaganda,” the Chief Minister stated firmly.
The controversy arose after several media outlets reported late Wednesday night that Mamata had personally stepped out to collect the SIR form from the BLO. Her clarification on Thursday morning sparked a fresh debate in political circles, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accusing opponents of attempting to malign her image through fabricated reports.
Meanwhile, the SIR process, launched across Bengal on Wednesday, has already become a politically charged issue. BLOs are visiting homes to verify voter details, but Trinamool leaders allege that the process is being hurried under the Election Commission’s direction, allegedly influenced by the BJP.
TMC has made it clear that while it supports the SIR process in principle, it opposes the rushed timeline. The party argues that the exercise, which took two and a half years to complete in 2002, is now being compressed into just two months. According to the ruling camp, the move is an attempt by the BJP to exclude genuine voters in order to “capture Bengal through the back door.”
Reiterating the party’s stand, Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the party, warned that if even one eligible voter’s name is excluded, the Trinamool will take its protest to Delhi. Mamata Banerjee has gone further, warning that she will launch a nationwide agitation and “topple the Modi government” if such attempts continue.
However, the Chief Minister’s immediate focus remains on countering what she describes as “false and politically motivated” news meant to mislead the people of Bengal.
