Hours after the Election Commission of India (ECI) sought a report from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer over her earlier remarks, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday reiterated her call to women voters to remain mobilised — even with household items — during the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Election.

Addressing a rally in Raghunathpur in Purulia, Mamata urged women to stay vigilant at polling booths and resist any attempts at alleged electoral malpractice. “If anyone comes dressed in a police uniform to rig the vote, stand your ground and resist them,” she said, adding that women should be prepared with everyday items such as hand fans or rolling pins if required.

The remarks come amid a political storm triggered by her earlier speech in Naxalbari on March 25, where she had made similar comments. Following that, the ECI flagged concerns and sought a detailed report, citing apprehensions that such statements could potentially lead to unrest or confrontation involving central forces.

At Saturday’s rally, Mamata maintained her stance, alleging that “outsiders” or political opponents might attempt to influence the electoral process. She called upon women voters to take the lead in safeguarding polling stations, framing it as a collective responsibility.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief also launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing it of undermining the state’s identity and attempting to manipulate voter lists. Drawing a comparison from the Mahabharata, she said, “The Trinamool represents the Pandavas, while the BJP aligns with the Kauravas,” leaving it to voters to choose their side.

Mamata further alleged that names of numerous voters — particularly women — had been removed from electoral rolls under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. She claimed that many women were facing difficulties due to changes in surnames after marriage and questioned the transparency of the process.

“In some booths, out of 500 voters, names of 400 are being struck off. Is this a joke?” she asked, accusing authorities of creating confusion by failing to clearly disclose updated voter lists.

She also criticised the central government over issues such as rising LPG prices, railway fare hikes, and administrative decisions, alleging that common citizens were being burdened while political motives were being prioritised.

Meanwhile, campaigning in Raniganj, the Chief Minister announced a rehabilitation package for residents of landslide-prone mining areas. She said families willing to relocate would receive Rs 10 lakh in financial assistance along with two flats, with the state bearing relocation costs.

“Nothing is more precious than human life. We do not want anyone to remain in danger,” Mamata said, adding that thousands of housing units are being developed for safer resettlement.

Despite the heated political exchanges, Mamata also emphasised communal harmony, stating that Bengal’s identity lies in celebrating all festivals together— from Ram Navami and Eid to Durga Puja and Christmas.

With elections approaching, Mamata’s remarks — and the EC’s response — have further intensified the political contest in the state, placing the spotlight firmly on campaign rhetoric and electoral conduct.
