Declaring that Mamata Banerjee’s political career is effectively over after her defeat in her own polling booth, Suvendu Adhikari on Monday delivered a sharp political message while addressing a thanksgiving and felicitation ceremony in Bhabanipur, his newly won constituency.

Marking his first visit to the area after his victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the Chief Minister of West Bengal said that Banerjee’s inability to secure leads even from Ward No. 77 reflected a complete rejection by the people. In the same address, Adhikari promised comprehensive development across the rest of the constituency.

Speaking at the event held near Camac Street in Ward No. 63, Adhikari emphasised direct communication with residents and announced the launch of a dedicated phone number and email ID for citizens of Bhabanipur to report grievances. He expressed gratitude for the massive mandate he received and pledged to repay the trust of the people through visible development work.

Despite holding the responsibility of governing the entire state, Adhikari asserted that he would remain closely connected to his constituency. Criticizing the previous administration, he claimed that residents had seen little transparency or accountability in local development over the past 15 years, adding that the situation would now change under his leadership.

He also announced that seven constituency offices would soon be established across Bhabanipur to ensure that residents can directly approach their elected representative without intermediaries. Referring to himself as a “brother” to the people, Adhikari said he would uphold their trust and deliver on his promises, adding that Bhabanipur felt as familiar to him as his former constituency, Nandigram.

Launching a scathing attack during his speech, Adhikari pointed out that Banerjee lost in all four booths at Mitra Institution in her own neighbourhood, where the BJP secured a lead. He used this to underscore his claim that the electorate had decisively turned against her leadership.

In the 2026 Assembly elections, Adhikari had contested from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram, winning both seats before choosing to retain Bhabanipur. The constituency, long regarded as Banerjee’s stronghold from 2011 to 2021, witnessed a major political shift as he defeated her by a margin exceeding 15,000 votes.

Recalling what he described as a past atmosphere of fear in the area, Adhikari said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the political climate had changed to one of trust. He warned that extortion, “cut-money” practices and political violence would no longer be tolerated, asserting that those involved in corruption would face imprisonment.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister outlined his broader goal of eliminating political violence and corruption while building a secure and transparent environment for the residents of Bhabanipur.
