On the eve of the nationwide rollout of GST 2.0, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Centre, alleging that the central government has “no contribution” in the new regime apart from giving speeches. She made the remarks while inaugurating the Durga Puja of Jodhpur Park 95 Palli.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation, highlighted the objectives of GST 2.0, stressing how it would bring relief to citizens by cutting down costs, including mediclaim expenses. He also recalled the history of GST’s introduction in India.
However, Mamata dismissed the Centre’s role, insisting that Bengal had borne the financial burden for ensuring benefits to citizens.
“Some people are giving speeches about GST. But it was I who first raised the issue of reducing GST on insurance. The credit is ours, not theirs. We are losing ₹900 crore because of this decision, but we did it for the people so that insurance money doesn’t rise,” the Trinamool Congress said.
She alleged that the Centre has failed to compensate Bengal for the deductions made from its share of GST. “This is the state’s GST, not the Centre’s. No compensation has been received. If it had been BJP-ruled states, the money would have been handed back immediately,” she remarked.
Mamata also took a swipe at the central government’s frequent fact-finding visits to Bengal. “Multiple committees come here, they run around, but remain blind to what is happening in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar. We are losing benefit of ₹20,000 crore meant for the people of Bengal,” she said.
Highlighting Bengal’s welfare schemes such as free bicycles, tablets and subsidies, she reiterated that the Centre was depriving the state of its rightful dues. “I am happy if people are doing well. Give us our money. What happens if all the money is deducted from our stake? They are campaigning with our money,” she added.
Mamata also alleged that her candid remarks made her a target of the opposition camp. She touched upon the issue of the mistreatment of Bengalis, accusing the Centre of being unfair to the state.
Wishing citizens a happy Durga Puja, Mamata reminded them once again that despite financial strain, her government continues to prioritise people’s welfare, even as the Centre withholds funds.
