A man allegedly threw his six-year-old son into the Ravi River from the Parel bridge near Kali Mata temple in Chamba district on Monday night, police said. A search operation has been launched to trace the child.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani said police teams were searching for the boy. Efforts were continuing to locate him.
According to a complaint filed by the child's grandfather, the boy's father Hitesh and mother Sharika had been having frequent arguments over minor issues. Family members had tried several times to settle their differences, but the tension between the couple continued.
The couple reportedly had another argument on July 16. The next day, Sharika's brother and other relatives came to Chamba and approached the women's police station. However, the dispute could not be resolved. Sharika then left for Amritsar with her maternal family and took her younger son with her.
According to the police complaint, the couple's elder son, Gagandeep, remained with his father at their quarter in Parel.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive behind the alleged act have not yet been established. A case has been registered at Sadar Chamba police station under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Dinesh Sharma reached the spot. Search teams were deployed along the Ravi River, but the child had not been found when the report was filed.
Saklani said the search operation was still underway. He added that police were investigating the circumstances of the incident and trying to establish the motive behind the alleged crime.
