A 35-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for molesting a junior resident doctor in a lift at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women doctors across the country, especially in the aftermath of a recent rape and murder case in Kolkata.
The accused, identified as Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Madhupur in Jharkhand's Jamtara district, allegedly made obscene gestures and attempted to touch a female junior resident doctor inside one of the lifts at RIMS on Sunday.
The doctor raised an alarm, leading to Kumar's arrest. He was subsequently taken to the Integrated Police Control Room at RIMS and then sent to Bariatu Police Station in Ranchi, where a case was registered. Kumar was sent to jail on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred when the female doctor, from the Oncology Department, was on her way to report for duty.
Following the incident, the non-academic junior resident doctors of all departments staged a pen-down protest and reported the entire episode to Dr. Ajit, the Head of the Oncology Department.
In response to the incident, the doctors presented several demands to the hospital management, including the appointment of a liftman in all lifts and the enforcement of a "one patient, one attendant" policy, which had been discussed earlier but not fully implemented across all departments.
They also called for an increase in the number of security guards in the institution to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
