A man allegedly killed four members of his family following a dispute over money from the sale of land in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, police said.
The incident occurred in Basantpur Rudal Ram village under the limits of Rupaidiha Police Station on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
According to police, the accused, identified as Nirankar, allegedly attacked his parents, grandmother and sister with an axe after a late-night argument over money and jewellery reportedly sold by his father.
As per the complaint, Gurudev, the accused’s elder brother, heard loud noises from another room around midnight. On entering, he saw Nirankar arguing with their father about the money received from the land sale. In a fit of rage, Nirankar allegedly began assaulting family members with the axe.
The deceased have been identified as Badlu Ram (60), his wife Sanju Devi (56), their daughter Parvati, and Badlu’s mother Sitala (80). All four died on the spot due to severe injuries, police said.
Gurudev sustained injuries while attempting to intervene. His son Azad, who was present at the time, raised an alarm, alerting villagers. Local residents soon gathered at the house and informed the police.
Durga Prasad Tiwari, Superintendent of Police (Rural), said, “Police reached the scene upon receiving information, took the bodies into custody and sent them to the District Hospital in Bahraich for post-mortem after completing the necessary legal formalities. A heavy police force has been deployed in the village as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.”
He further stated that the accused also injured himself by hitting his head with a brick. Nirankar was taken into custody and admitted to the District Hospital in Bahraich before being referred to Lucknow for further treatment under police supervision.
An FIR has been registered against Nirankar under Sections 103(1) and 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a written complaint. Senior police officials and a forensic team have inspected the scene, and a detailed investigation is underway.
